ABOUT
I am a painter of people, exploring mood and meaning.

My paintings of dancers are about gesture and movement but above all about feeling and vitality. It has been said that dance is the body speaking poetry, a subject I find captivating and challenging in equal measure. I use videos of ballet as a starting point to make sketches. As I draw, the figures suggest a narrative which then informs my choice of palette and composition.

I started painting seriously in 2015, on retirement from full time medical practice, studying with a variety of teachers. In 2023 I completed an eighteen month Diploma in the art and craft of oil painting with award winning artist Martin Kinnear.
Regular life drawing is the foundation of my practice and I often incorporate graphic elements into my work. A lifetime spent visiting galleries has imbued me with the traditions of European art so my influences are many including Degas, Schiele, Lautrec, John Wentz and Robert Heindel.

I exhibit with the Reading Guild of Artists and Wokingham Art Society and am excited to be to be part of a group show this November.
